  • Scottish explorer John MacGregor was responsible for introducing canoeing as a recreation and sport when he was introduced to canoes on a camping trip in Canada and the USA in 1858.
  • It became an Olympic sport in Berlin in 1936. It was part of the 1924 Paris games as a demonstration sport.
  • The International Canoe Federation is the world wide canoeing organisation.
