Single Seater Auto Racing

  • Formula One is officially called FIA Formula One World Championship. It is also known as Formula 1 or F1
  • Formula One is the highest class of single seater auto racing sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de I'Auotmobile (FIA)
  • The formula in the name Formula One refers to the rules which all participants in the race must comply
  • Formula One season contains a series of races, known as Grands Prix
  • Formula One cars race at speeds of up to 360 km/hr (220 mph). The engines of the cars can perform a maximum of 18,000 revolutions per minute
  • Formula One has a global television audience of 527 million people during the 2010 season
  • The inaugural season of Forumla One racing was held in 1950. 24 drivers and 12 teams participate in a Formula One race
  • The Formula One Group is the legal holder of the commercial rights of Formula One races
  • A Formula One Grand Prix event spans a weekend, which begins with two free practice sessions on Friday and one free practice on Saturday. A qualifying session is held after the last free practice session which determines the starting order for the main race on Sunday
  • The following points are awarded for finishing the races. The first position will get 25 points, second - 18 and third - 15. For positions 4-10, the following points would be awarded - 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1
  • Jaime Alguersuari is the youngest drive to start a race at 19 years, 125 days in the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix
  • Michael Schumacher holds the record for most number of wins. He won 91 out of 285 entries at a percentage of 31.93%
  • Sebastian Vettel is the youngest driver to win a race at 21 years, 73 days. He achieved the feat winning the 2008 Italian Grand Prix
  • Michael Schuamcher holds the record for most number of podium finishes - 154 podiums out of 285 entries
  • Michael Schumacher has won 7 World Drivers' championships - winning in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004
