  • Intermittent Fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating.
  • IF has many advantages, but it is mostly used for calorie restriction for weight loss.
  • Most popular Intermittent Fasting methods are: 16 hour fasts (Leangains protocol), Alternate day fasting(24 hour fasts), twice per week fasts.
  • All of these methods involving splitting the time into "eating" and "fasting" periods. During the fasting periods, you don't eat any foods with calories in it. Water, Coffee, Tea are OK as long as they don't have much calories in them.
  • A 2014 review showed that intermittent fasting can lead to weight loss. However, the review said that long-term calorie restriction can lead to slightly more weight loss compared to IF.
  • Health benefits of Intermittent Fasting include weight loss, losing of belly fat, insulin resistance, reduction in inflammation, reduce LDL cholesterol, reduce blood triglycerides, may help prevent cancer, increases brain hormone called BDNF, anti-aging etc.
  • The research on IF is still in early stages. However, it should be noted that Intermittent Fasting is not for everyone and you should consult a physician and find out if it can help you.
