  • Iron is known to mankind in its pure form for at least 5,000 years.
  • Cast iron was first produced in China in 550 B.C. Europe could only catch up with the cast iron making process in medieval times.
  • India were amongst the first to know the use of molding iron to form of pillars as seen in the construction of Iron Pillar in New Delhi.
  • The name "iron" comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "iron" and Scandinavian "iarn" for the Metal.
  • The element symbol for iron is Fe, which comes from the Latin word, "ferrum".
  • Iron comprises of about 5.6% of the Earth's crust and almost all of the earth's core.
