Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea

  • Kim Jong-il was born on 16 February 1941 (Soviet records) but Korean records shown his date of birth as 16 February 1942.
  • He was projected as "Dear Leader", in similar lines of his father who was called "Great Leader".
  • He was named as the supreme commander of North Korean armed forces on December 24, 1991.
  • In April 2009, he got re-elected as the chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission.
  • Kim, like his father, had fear of flying. He always travels in a private armored train for state visits to Russia and China.
  • Kim is a huge movie fan and had 20,000 video tapes and DVDs.
  • Kim is reported to be having a US$4 billion deposit in a European banks for use in case he ever needed to flee North Korea.
  • He died on December 19, 2011, as per North Korean government announcement. He died whilst travelling via train to an area outside Pyongyang. Kim Jong-un was announced his successor.
