- The 100 metres, 200 metres, and 400 metres runs are the three sprint competitions held in Summer Olympic Games.
- The 100 m run evolved from the 100 yard dash.
- The 200 m run came from the 200m distance which is popular as the furlong (or 1/8 of a mile).
- The 400 m was the successor to the 440 yard dash or quarter-mile race.
- Uncommon sprint distances such as 50m, 60m, 300m etc. are used in school and college games.
